Monument to Multiculturalism
Toronto, Ontario |

|
This monument was presented to the city of Toronto on the occasion of its sesquicentennial by the national congress of Italian Canadians of Toronto. Often referred to as “Symbol of Multiculturalism”, this monument, by Italian sculptor Francesco Perilli, is located in front of Union Station in downtown Toronto and was unveiled on Canada day, 1985 . Our firm was hired to design the monument base and general set up.
The location of this monument was chosen as the being the point of arrival of most 20th century immigrants who settled in Toronto. The monument was conceived as a statue cast in bronze, suspended on air in a post-modern style.
It represents a man who, at the center of the globe, joins two meridians; while the remaining meridians are held aloft by doves, a peace symbol and visual representation of the cultural vitality of the Canadian nation which, in spite of many adversities, constructed a prosperous new world, under the banner of dialogue and mutual respect. |
