Market Lane Square

The redevelopment of Market Lane Square proposes expansion of the pedestrian realm and the reduction of the asphalt area. Surface parking are minimized and through-traffic is circuitous to reduced speed. Colonnaded structures enclose the square’s activity areas and amenities. Dramatic glazed pavilions shelter the access to underground parking. New buildings on south are set back to allow for a generous natural light aperture maximizing solar gain on the square. The Area Concept structures the space along a central axis that connects amphitheatre, fountain/stage and memorial sculpture. Enclosure is provided by open colonnaded archways. Interface between square and building allows for forecourts that serve the buildings’ functions. The amphitheatre will play a passive role for one to view the to-and-fro activities of the Square and for formal entertainment and staging of special events. Colonnaded, ‘permeable’ arbours frame the public realm creating an’ oasis’ for pedestrians and civic activities. Canopies to shelter access and bring light to underground parking are designed as sculptural elements to add to the three-dimensional interest of the open space. |
